When we were growing up, all the children in our family were treated equally. No-one was left out or disadvantaged by one person’s illness, which was only ‘right and proper’, considering my sister with polio was the only one of us able to do cartwheels on our front lawn.

Plasters, splints and physios were simply a fact of life.

The cost to our mother – immeasurable!
